LONDON’S FAMOUS PEDLAR MARKET
The Caledonian Market, Islington, the famous open-air fair to which many people go for bargains in second-hand goods of every description, is steadily growing in popularity. For the sixteenth year in succession i the revenue has increased. The market was originally held on Fridays. A second day, Tuesday, was added in 1924. The growth of the income to the City of London Corporation, the owners, from payments for pitches, and other sources, is shown by the following figures:— Tuesday Friday. £ £ 1925 3,003 10,196 1930 8,732 15,095 1935 12,478 18,797 Caledonian Market is the survival of the Pedlars’ Market of old Bartholomew Fair and is held at the Metropolitan Cattle Market. The report of Mr J. R. Hayhurst, superintendent, shows that more cattle and fewer sheep are coming to London. There were 6310 head of cattle exposed for sale in 1935, an increase of 1,646 over the previous year, and 27,995 sheep, a decrease of 9,174. The demand for lairage accommodation was:

in 1936. Licences were granted or renewed to 110 drovers and no cruelty was reported.
