EXPORT OF FRUIT

AMOUNT OF THE GUARANTEE CABINET TO GIVE EARLY DECISION The Government’s decision regarding the amount of the guarantee for exported apples #nd pears this season has been subject to long negotiations, difficulty being experienced in ascertaining the production costs under the new labour conditions. The . Minister of Labour, the Hon. H. T. Armstrong, and the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. W. Lee Martin, are both actively concerned, and their officers have completed an investigation in the orcharding areas, their report on the working costs being now available.

Mr Lee Martin has stated that the guarantee will be fixed by Cabinet at an early date. At a meeting held in Nelson during Mr H. Turner’s recent visit, it was stated that the government had agreed to guarantee not less than 10s for the coming season but the growers representatives considered that that amount was not sufficient considering the present financial position of the industry.
