RIVER BOARD MEETING (From Our Own Correspondent) At a meeting of the Motueka River Board, held in the Council Chambers there were present Messrs A. E. Fry {chairman), H. J. Trewhvas, A. D. Taylor, B. T. Rowling, and E. C. Fry.
Arising out of the minutes Mr Taylor reported that the willows at the western end of Whakarewa street, had been removed, and Mr E. C. Fry informed the meeting that the work at the Brooklyn creek had not been completed on account of <1 shortage of labour. It was decided that consideration of the Bill, in connection with tho proposed' amalgamation of local bodies, be deferred until the next meeting of the Board. ' • ACTING-FOREMAN’S REPORT The acting-foreman (Mr P. j. Quaylc) reported as. follows—-“At the request of tho clerk,' I submit the following brief report on the work carried out by men under the No. 5 scheme. Work was commenced on 2nd November and continued until the 15th of this month. A fair area of scrub has been cut along the river bank, but tlie main part of the work has been done in removing willows along the waters’ edge and removing bank to form a loose face of sand etc., for tho flood water to scour. Considering a fair amount of lost time and tho lack ,of mechanical appliances, good progress has been made. Mr H. J. Trewavas and I made an inspection of this locality this afternoon (16th December), when I handed over the tools to him for removal and safe, keeping.” Mr Trewavas, in referring to the report, stated that most of the work he had in view had been carried out. The removal of willows had proved a bigger job than anticipated, however considering all the circumstances quite good work had been done. The chairman said lie understood that no further labour would be available under the No. 5 scheme. The amount expended on wages for the work covered by the foreman’s report was £l2l 14s 6d.
In reply to a question concerning the, financial position of the Board, the Clerk stated that, after making provision for accounts, which amounted to £166 12s 3d, there would be a debit balance of £9O 8s lOd; but when refunds came to band the Board would be in credit to the extent of £49 Os lOd. PENALTY ON UNPAID RATES Tim chairman intimated that outstanding rates amounted to £344, hut that the collectable rate outstanding ,was £272 12s lid. He thought that some special effort should be made to collect this money as the Board required finance. It was a case of collecting tho money or paying interest on overdraft.
