AIR-RIGGER SENTENCED (United PreßS Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON, 14th December. Joseph Smith, the air-rigger who was sentenced., to four months’ imprisonment for larcency of an Airspeed aeroplane which he intended to fly to Spain, was sentenced to eight months' imprisonment for feloniously killing Arthur Gargett while in the commission of an unlawful act. An incident occurred at Portsmouth Aerodrome a few Hours before the issue of the British Air Ministry’s warning to pilots against the taking of aeroplanes to Spain. A statement made public by Airspeed, Ltd., reported: “Two wood-working employees of this company went into a hangar on the Portsmouth Aerodrome and took out a Courier aeroplane, the property of the company. Neither of the men was a pilot. In this aeroplane they attempted to take off from the aerodrome but hit an obstruction and crashed. Both men were seriously injured. Subsequent to the accident one of the men said that they took the machine with ,the intention of flying it to Spain.” Some days later, Gargett, one of the two men concerned, was reported to have died from tetanus after an operation.
