MIRRORS IN 'PHONE KIOSKS

In various parts of the country 500 new telephone kiosks, designed by Sir Gilbert Scott, were installed six months ago. In each, for the first time, were a mirror and a parcel rack. An official of the G.P.O. explained that the inclusion of mirrors in the kiosks was a psychological experiment. “We had found,” he said, “that eight of ten people scribble and draw on the walls of the boxes while waiting for their number. The practice caused great damage to our boxes. The installation of the mirror has solved the problem. The 500 new boxes are as fresh and free from pencil marks as they were when installed. This will mean a great saving in the cost of their maintenance.” Eventually all the 20,000 kiosks in the country will be replaced by the new model, to which further improvements may be added.
