CRITICS OF JUDGING
(To The Editor) Sir, —Owing to a slight mistake there is an erroneous impression abroad that I judged the cakes etc., at the recent A. and P. Association’s Show, at Richmond. May I, through your valuable paper, assure the ladies concerned, that my activities were confined to that part of the section, dealing with jams, jellies, pickles etc., where I was entrusted with the sole responsibility. It might also be helpful to explain that competent judges do not rely on sight, when making an award; but give their earnest consideration to each exhibit, by putting it to the main test for palatability and consistency, with a view to maintaining impartial justice to exhibitors. Critics from the outside of the screen are thus at a decided disadvantage; as the most showy exhibit often falls far short of the ideal when properly judged.—l am, etc., LILY HILDYARD. Brightwater, 24th November.
