FASCIST DEMONSTRATION
NO POWER TO BAN IN ADVANCE HOME SECRETARY’S COMMENT (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON, 7th October. The Home Secretary, Sir John Simon, speaking at Cleckheaton, Yorkshire, referred to the Fascist demonstration on 4th October, and said that the existing law does not empower the Home ’Secretary to ban demonstrations in advance. He would remind critics that an alteration of the
law in order to provide power would apply all round, to demonstrations of the Left as well as of the Right. "The antics and language of these uniformed Fascists undoubtedly _ are most provocative,” he said. “I dislike this dressing up in fancy uniforms and this aping of military organisation for political purposes,” he declared. “I believe these methods are repugnant to ordinary people. I consider that the Fascist doctrine is as un-English and as unwanted as the Communist doctrine, but it is the duty of the authorities to maintain freedom of meetings and of speech.”
