WASHINGTON TREATY
RENEWAL OF ARTICLE XIX MOVE BY BRITAIN (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received Bth October, 9.30 a.m.) LONDON, 7th October. The British Government has approached the United States and Japan regarding renewal of Article XIX of the Washington Treaty of 1922 to maintain the status quo regarding nonfortification of islands in the Pacific. ATTITUDE OF JAPAN (Received Bth October, 12.5 p.m.) TOKIO, 7th October. The Foreign Office has not yet received the British note regarding the Washington Treaty. It is believed that Japan will approve of the spirit and aim of the proposal, but will carefully consider its reply because the areas concerned, chiefly Bonin, Loo-choo, and the Formosa Islands are vital to home defence, while England and the United States are restricted only in regard te outlying possessions.
