MOTUEKA HARBOUR BOARD

TRAINING WALL CONSTRUCTION TO COMMENCE IMMEDIATELY (From Our Own Correspondent) At a special meeting of the Motueka Harbour Board there were present: Messrs C. L. Harvey (chairman), D. L. Drummond, P. B. Calder, C. H. Mackay, D. Haining, A. Rowling and H. Everett. Mr C. O’Brien, foreman of works, was also present by invitation. The chairman, in opening the meeting, expressed pleasure at the result of the poll, taken in connection with a special loan of £SOOO for channel restoration work. All the members had, he said, done their best to bring about a successful issue. The official figures were now available, and were as follows: For the proposal 239, against the proposal 147; informal 7. This meant that the loan had been carried by eight votes over a threefifths majority. He had telegraphed Mr C. O’Brien to be present at this meeting, as he believed Mr O Brien ! could furnish the board with necessary information and advice. On the motion of Mr Everett it was unanimously decided that the board commence immediately with the construction of the proposed training wall in the harbour channel. Mr O’Brien submitted estimates for materials, machinery and tools, which would be required on the work. Provision was made in the estimates for a new punt to carry 17 tons, the measurements being 40 feet by 20 feet-with three feet freeboard. Messrs Everett and O’Brien were

appointed a deputation to wait upon the Wairnea County Council at its meeting on Friday, in regard to the hire of certain machinery, and to make enquiries concerning the services of an engineer. The board agreed, on the motion of Messrs Drummond and Calder, that Mr O’Brien’s offer of tools on hire, for construction work, be accepted. It was resolved, Messrs Calder and Mackay. that Mr O’Brien’s engagement as foreman of construction works, date from Monday, sth October. Mr O’Brien was heartily thanked for the estimates, the valuable information and the advice he had given the board that evening. On the motion of Messrs Everett and Mackay the secretary was instructed to advise the Employment Division of the Department of Labour that the Motueka Harbour Board purpose commencing with the harbour construction works forthwith.
