COURT ON BARGE

The ancient Admiralty Court of Rochester (Kent), which controls the fisheries of the Medway from Maidstone to Sheerness and dates from the sixteenth century, assembles on a barge moored off Rochester Pier. The ouaint procession from the Guildhall, headed by the principal water bailiff carrying the two silver orbs —part of the city insignia, which dates back to times ‘‘out of mind,” as the record states —includes the Mayor, in capacity of Admiral of the river, and the Aldermen. The jury is composed of 13 fishermen, who are freemen of the river. Presentments include the opening of oyster bed for a certain season, and the granting of doles to poor and aged fishermen. Since 1901 over £I,OOO in 10s has been paid to such fishermen at Christmas.
