COUNTRY CRICKET

WAIMEA ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING HELD THE STANDARD OF PLAY The annual general meeting of the Waimea Cricket Association was held in Hodgson’s rooms, Wakefield. There were present: The president (Mr J. Fowler), Mr C. Mead, vice-president, and the following club delegates, Messrs R. Savage and W. Mason (Richmond); E. Duncan and R. Haycock (Brightwater); R. Best (Belgrove); ~P. Cowin and N. Hawkes (Dovedale); V. Davies (Churchill); M. Eden, T. Baigent. J. Hildyard, C. Jordan and A. Loveridge (Wakefield). I The audited balance sheet showing a credit of £7 19s 2d, with £3 unpaid affiliation fees outstanding was adopted. The repdrt of the secretary (Mr R. Davies) was read and received. The report stated: — “Although at the last annual meeting it was the intention of delegates to" try and raise the class of our cricket, 1 consider their efforts were in vain and the general standard of play did not improve in any department and I am certain, a new scheme will have to be adopted if we wish to improve our cricket. “Competitions: The competition games commenced keenly, but it was not very long before they slipped back into the old groove, too much time being utilised in completing our first round, which resulted in the second round being played by teams of practically half strength due to harvesting of hops and tobacco crops. For the latter part of the season Brightwater and Richmond had to play each other. Brightwater senior and Richmond juniors are to be congratulated on winning the respective competitions.

“Representative matches: Representative matches were played against Nelson and Motueka, and Messrs M. R. Eden and S. Irvine are to be congratulated on being selected to represent the Nelson district. “Newman Shield: We were unsuccessful in our challenge against Motueka, holders of the Newman Shield, Waimea having to take the field under strength, due to players not being able to make the trip. “K. Cup: Our junior team was unsuccessful in the game for the ‘K.’ Cup against Tapawera, and also were beaten by Motueka for the Rowling Cup. “Rowling Cup: I consider this Cup

is not receiving sufficient encouragement by members of Motueka and Waimea Associations, and whilst in Motueka, after learning of Mr S. Rowling’s reasons for donating such a beautiful trophy, I endeavoured to raise interest in the benefits our juniors would derive from the gift, but I received very little encouragement over there. I would like to see Waimea play a leading part and endeavour to make Labour Day an annual Rowling Cup fixture between Motueka and Waimea juniors. A return match could be arranged and played at a date in the New Year. “Wellington Touring Team: Our thanks are again due to Mr Reyling for bringing over a Wellington touring team last Christmas holidays, and I have already been in communication with Mr Reyling as to the possibility of another visit this year.”

ELECTION OF OFFICERS The election of officers resulted: — Patron: Mr T. Newman (re-elected). President: Mr J. Fowler. Vice-presidents: Dr. Closs, Messrs W. Hawkes, H. W. Kelly, C. Mead, PI. Manoy, A.
