NEW CANON FOR CHRISTCHURCH
THE REV. F. B. REDGRAVE The Rev. F. B. Redgrave, vicar of Fendalton and a member of the wellknown Nelson family, has been appointed by Bishop West-Watson a canon of Christchurch Cathedral, replacing Canon H. Williams, who has retired.
The new canon was born at Nelson, where he attended Nelson College. After leaving school he joined the New Zealand Insurance Company, and was soon transferred to Christchurch. He was the first to win the essay prize offered by the Insurance Institute of New Zealand. While in Christchurch Mr Redgrave decided to study for Holy Orders, and he matriculated and passed part of his bachelor of arts degree while still in the office. He then entered College House under Dean Carrington and took the master of arts degree with. secondclass honours in political science, at the same time passing his theological examinations.
Ordained in 1908, by Archbishop Julius, Mr Redgrave was appointed curate to St. Luke’s Church, under Canon Sedgwick, at the time the present church was being erected. Three years later he went to England for further parochial experience, and was one of 11 curates at the Leeds parish church under Dr. Samuel Bickersteth. On his return to New Zealand he was appointed vicar of the Lincoln parochial district. Five years later he went to Napier, on the invitation of his former vicar, Canon Sedgwick, who had become Bishop of Waiapu, and became vicar of St. Andrew’s Church there.
In 1922 he was appointed general secretary of the New Zealand Anglican Board of Missions, and during the seven years that he was in charge of the missionary work he obtained first-hand knowledge of the church’s activities by extensively touring the island diocese of Melanesia and Polynesia. Seven years ago he succeeded the Rev. H. S. Leach as vicar of* Fendalton.
