MINING

The Rirnu dredge clean-up for the period ended sth October was 216 crude ounces from 56.095 cubic yards worked' in 124£ hours, says a Press Association message from Hokitika. Alexander Mines, Limited, has issued the following return for the month of September:—Battery department: 510 tons crushed for 3140 z 9dwt of melted gold. Cyanide: 315 tons of sands were treated for 750» 18dwt of bullion. Total estimated value, £2613. In addition, 12.3 tons of concentrates were saved, valued at £351. In estimating the above yalues gold has been taken at 140 s per fine ounce. The Brian Boru dredge, which has been undergoing repairs and alterations for some time, has recommenced operations after a long suspension of dredging operations. The dredge is working intermittently for a week or two until the motors and plant generally are run in. The plant is running satisfactorily, and the company will shortly be joining the list of dredges making regular returns. The return from the Maori Gully dredge last week was 430 z 2dwt for 130 hours’ work. The dredge has now returned to the crbek after working for about six weeks in a loop outside the area prospected. Entering the loop, the returns were much more than payable, but nr> the return they declined. Since the present return the dredge has pulled to the other side of the flat to square up the face, and when this is completed in a week or 10 days a wide face of the fiat will be available for working.
