WOMEN OWN ISLANDS

A woman owns Brownsea Island, off the coast of Dorset, near Poole, and now two islands have been acquired by women. One has bought the tiny Channl Island called Lihou, off Guernsey. It can be reached by a causeway at low tide. It has a farmhouse and the ruins of a twelfth-century priory which belonged to the Abbey of Mont St. Michel, itself a natural island at high tide. Three islands in the Hebrides, Berneray, Pabbay, and Mungulay, all famous for their grass, have been bought by another woman. The sheep fed on them are soon sold on the mainland. The purchaser of the islands will have a flock of 600. A church and school on Mungulay Island recall the day when it had a population which has now vanished.
