All tile riders went away well, but on turning at the Port ran into a strong neat! wind, : ml speed slackened at this point until after rounding the corner at the The Hut at Tahuiia. To some of the riders this part of the course proved harder than the hill work. Un the first lap J. Hockey had trouble with uis gears on Bishopdale Hill, and lost -cry valuable time. At Hale’s Corner I. Boyle and M. Graham turned at 2.15 p.m., followed by .T, Hockey at 2.1/1 p.m. Next came a very strong bunch—o. White, Lummis, Beach, Olsen, Guthrey. and Bye-Smith (at 2.24 p.m.), the last rider doing some fine work on the corner and providing a thrill for the spectators on the spot. Delany and Robson passed at 2.27 p.m., R.’ Price and M. Brice at 2.311,- p.m., and the scratch men, T. Langley, L. Sowerby, and F. Blackett, at 2.361 p.m. Some fast riding was done down Vanguard street, at the same time giving the riders a rest after the hill work and cornering. At Day’s Corner, Boyle and Graham

were going well, and hockey, making a great effort to regain his position, turned two minutes behind them. Bench, Ulsen. Guthrey, l’ye-Smith, White and Lummis were 7’inin behind, Delany and J. Robson, 2min ; Price brothers, fimin ; Langley, Sowerby, Blackett, 2£min. On the second lap Delany got a puncture and returned from Auckland Point to Bay’s Corner to have his tyre pumped up, remounted, and caught his team mate, J. Robson, at the Annesbrook overhead bridge. M. Graham and T. Boyle were riding strongly, though Beyle seemed to have difficulty in manipulating his brake and passed Hale’s Corner at 2.411 p.m., with J. Hockey 50 yards behind, followed by Olsen, Lummis, Bye-Smith, Beach, White, anci Guthrey at 2.43 p.m , Delany and Robson at 2.50 p.m., Price brothers at 2.55 p.m., and Blackett, Langley, and Sowerby at 2.581 p.m. At Day’s Corner Graham and Boyle were followed by Hockey, £min behind, with Beach, Olsen, Guthrey, Pye-Smith, White, and Lummis smin later, Robson and Delany 3min, Price brothers 6min, and Blackett, Sowerby, and Langley fimin further behind. Here, too, the scratch aien overtook Max Price, who through lack of gears found it necessary on this lap to walk part of the hill. Coming down the hill they also caught R. Price, but unfortunately Blackett had chain trouble and had to dismount. On looking over bis cycle he noticed a cut tyre, forcing his retirement at Hale’s Comer, where Hockey turned at 3.35 p.m., followed by Olsen, Lummis, Beach. Guthrey, and White at 3.36 p.m., with Boyle ICO yards behind and Pye-Smith a similar distance behind Boyle. J. Robson at 3.39 p.m. and Sowerby, Langley, and R. Price at 3.45 p.m. M. Price retired at this point. At Motueka street, T. Langley’s tyre punctured, and taking the first available cycle raised the seat, remounted and get off again. At Day’s Corner Hockey was followed by Beach. •Olsen. ’Guthrey, White, and Lummis 1-min behind, with J- Robson sAmin away, followed by Sowerbv and R. Price sAmin and Langley lmin behind them. T. Langley’s troubles were not yet ended, for in the fifth lap the brake on the borrowed cycle proved ineffective under the heavier weight and necessitated him at each hill and corner taking his foot from the top-clip and applying it to the tyre as a break, causing him to lose valuable time. He completed a full lap on the machine and then changed to Pye-Smith’s cycle he having retired at this spot. At Hale’s Corner Lummis, White. Olsen, Guthrey, and Beach turned at 4.2 p.m., followed by Hockey 4.4 p.m., J. Robson 4.61 p.m.,’ Sowerby 4.9 p.m., R. Price and T. Price and Langley 4.371 p.m. Sowerby and Olsen retired on finishing the lap. At Day’s Corner Beach, White, Guthrey, and Lummis (who had beon riding at this time for 2hrs 27Amin) were riding strongly, and were followed by J. Robson 4min later, and Langley and Price 9min later. Sowerby and Olsen retired here.

On the seventh lap J. Robson retired at the overhead bridge. At Hale’s Corner Guthrey, Lummis, White, and Beach passed at 4.54 p.m., followed bv Langley and Price at 5.4 p.m., and at Day s Corner they were following lOmin behind. On the eighth lap the riders were still going strongly all the way, and a very enthusiastic crowd gathered to watch for the final results. A good view of the riders was obtained as they rode down Vanguard street toward the finishing post. They wore four very evenly matched riders and worked well as a team throughout the race. Near the Club Hotel Guthrie sprinted away, butin a well-fought finish Lummis crossed the line first with White second and Guthrey third, a wheel separating each of these riders, with Beach, who swerved to miss a spectator, about two lengths behind. Langley and Price finished a dead-heat. A. Lummis, 3hrs 18in 56sec ... 1 G. White, 3hrs 18min 56 l-ssec 2 W. Guthrey, 3hrs 18min 56 2-ssec 3 T. Beach, 3hrs 18min 56 3-ssec 4
