SENSATIONAL EXPERIENCE
PASSENGER PLANE HIT UNDERCARRIAGE AND WHEEL TORN AWAY PILOT MAKES SAFE LANDING (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON, 4th October. “Port wheel burst. Clear the aerodrome for arrival at 3.45 p.m.,” was the sensational wrieless message received at Renfrew airport from Captain Elgey, flying a ten-seater passenger plane from Belfast to Glasgow with two other employees. The plane was 4,000 feet up over the Irish Sea flying in dense mist when there was a violent bump and an explosion. Captain Elgey said he did not know what happened. He just waited for the plane to fall to pieces in the sea, but when he flew from the mist he looked out and saw that the greater part of the undercarriage and a wheel had disappeared. Apparently the plane had been hit by an aeroplane climbing in the haze. Captain Elgey miraculously landed the heavy plane on the remaining wheel without mishap, swinging the machine round as it touched the ground. He alighted semiconscious as the result of the ordeal. What hit the plane is still a mystery. No plane is reported missing.
