YOUTH EMPLOYMENT

MORE BOYS LEAVING SCHOOL

The that more boys than in 1935 had left College since the beginning of August to take up positions, was mentioned in,the report of the Principal of Nelson College, Mr H. V. Searle, which was presented at last evening’s meeting of the Council of Governors. / “Since Ist August, 22 boys have left to take up employment, as compared with 11 last year,” said the Principal. “Since the beginning of the first term 69 have obtained positions as against 58 last year. The difference is accounted for by the increase of 11 in the number leaving since Ist August. This may be the result of improving conditions or it may be the result of the tendency for some employers to take younger boys. In the latter ease parents should not be unduly alarmed, certainly not to the extent of terminating the boy’s education at the third form.

“All new legislation brings about results which cannot be foreseen and adjustments have to be made. That the matter is receiving attention is shown by a recent interview between the Minister of Education and representatives of secondary schools.”
