A FRIENDLY MATCH In a friendly cricket match at Stoke the Anchor Company secured a first innings win over Hospital by 72 runs, Anchor Company won the toss and elected to bat, a good opening partnership between Vass and A. Jones bringing up 55 runs before Jones was caught after batting soundly for 37. Vass, Anchor Company’s captain, retired at 28, to be, followed by F. Johnson 25 and W. Dee 28 who both retired after scoring freely. Alborough also reached double figures, scoring 11. The innings closed for a total of 157. Bowling for Hospital, Thomason took one for 4, Dickinson one for 10, and Gillett one for .34. Hospital opened their innings with Thomas and Dickinson, but E. Jones securing much pace off the pitch early obtained the wickets of Dickinson and the next man in, Gillett. Despite the bad start Thomas mixing good defence with forceful driving, went on to compile an invaluable 46, completely altering the state of the game. Taylor scored a useful 15, while A. Caples hit hard for 9 runs, the innings closing for 85 runs. Bowling for Anchor, Vass secured three for 20, E. Jones two for 10,'A. Jones one for 15. Alborough and Cronin also took one wicket each. The excellent form displayed by players in this match augurs well for club cricket this season, but much of the confidence displayed must be attributed to the splendid condition of the wicket and outfield, which is indeed a credit to the groundsmen.
