EARLIER PAY DAY

(To The Editor) Sir, —Much has been done re. the above in various parts of New Zealand since the advent of the 40 hour week. So why not have the same’in our own little city. < . During the past week we have seen where very reputable firms have been fined because their employees were working after noon on Saturday, due apparently to housewives not receiving their allowance soon enough to enable them to give their orders earlier in the week. One can imagine the various depots being flooded with orders for delivery on Saturday morning', and imagine the feelings of the already harassed shopkeeper receiving a ring from a customer residing in some out of the way part, for delivery of several things. The shopkeepers are only too pleased to give delivery, when possible and within reason, but with the shopkeeper already having more orders on hand than he can deliver in the short Saturday morning, and for anyone to expect the usual cheerful response is out of the question. The blame however, is not always attributable to the public but to numerous employers who have not considered paying earlier in the week. Representations have already been made to large employers in Nelson and it is pleasing to record several have decided to adopt the sensible scheme of paying on Tuesday or Wednesday, giving the housewife ample time to procure the household goods in good time. So all that is necessary is for every employer to pay earlier, and only then will it be possible for the majority of the shopping public to do their part. So I close, with an appeal to the public to do their shopping or place their orders as early as possible in the week and have a little consideration for the usually cheerful shop assistants, who are at present literally run off their legs every Saturday morning.—I am etc. COUNTER JUMPER. Nelson, sth October.
