ON THE RANGE

NELSON DEFENCE RIFLE CLUB IMPROVEMENT IN SHOOTING SOME BRILLIANT SCORES Conditions were good on Saturday at the Seabourne Range, Wakapuaka when the Nelson Defence Rifle Club fired the third shoot of the season for Wilkins and Field's Trophy. The shooting on this occasion was ten shots each at 300 yards and 500 yards with two optional sighters at each range. The attendance was quite well maintained and as the days get longer it is to be hoped that more members will attend.

Early in the afternoon a light drift of wind backwards and forwards across the range was just sufficient at times to put shots out of the bull. A little later a light three o’clock wind gradually increased in strength until at the cessation of shooting a six degree wind was blowing. The light was changeable in the early afternoon but dark clouds obscured the sun and sighting became very hard especially as there was a bank of light clouds at the back of the targets. The shooting showed great improvement on the previous Saturday’s and there were several brilliant individual scores. The most noteworthy at 300 yards was N. Manssen’s possible 50, the first of the season, and he is to be heartily congratulated on his very fine performance. A. S. Barnett and F. H. Sharland also shot well at 300 yards to secure 47 each. At 500 yards, B. B. Jones shot brilliantly to secure the first possible of the season at this range and he is also to be heartily congratulated on his excellent effort. Also prominent at this range were H. Day and N. Manssen who each scored 48.

The highest scorer of the day off the rifle was N. Manssen who with 50 and 48 set a very high standard. He thus securled the leg-in for Wilkins and Fields’ Trophy and also won the A Grade Feathers. The B Grade Feathers were won by G. S. Henry. Fixtures for next Saturday will be arranged at this evening’s . special general meeting of the club. Appended are the scores:—
