REVELLERS’ ESCAPADE?
TAXI CABS REMOVED WHILE DRIVERS SLEPT (United Press Association) INVERCARGILL, 4th October. Mystery surrounds the removal of two taxis from the Red Band rank in Dee street about half-past 4 this morning. While two drivers on late shift slept soundly in the office, some persons took charge of one of the taxis and drove quietly away. It is known that about that hour a Red Band taxi crashed into a hedge in Duke street and a man and a woman were seen to leave it.
Later the second taxi was removed from the rink. At least, that is what one of the drivers believes, as he discovered it backed into the kerb with all the lights on not far from the rink. The first car had also been returned damaged. The police theory is that revellers commandeered the first car, and after the accident in Duke street cooly returned to the rink and removed the second car in order to tow the first one.
