A.J.C. RACES

FLEMINGTON RACES

TALKING WINS DERBY WITH MALA IN SECOND PLACE SILVER RING’S SPRING STAKES (United Press Association— By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) SYDNEY, 4th October. The Australian Jockey Club’s spring meeting opened at Randwick on Saturday in warm weather. There was an attendance of 70,000 and the track was in excellent condition.

Gold Rod, which was considered to hold a mortgage on the Derby, failed to stay the distance and he was beaten into third place. The race commenced sensationally for several horses collided at barrier rise and momentarily a grave smash appeared imminent when Shakespeare fell, but the rest of the field raced away unharmed. Talking was the early pacemaker from Gold Rod and the Woodville-trained colt, Mala. Passing the mile Gold Rod ran to the front with Mala in close attendance and they continued running in that order until the home turn where Mala supplanted Gold Rod and appeared likely to go on to victory, but Talking, finishing with rare determination, worried the New Zealand colt out of the prize. The Epsom handicap was marred by an unsatisfactory start and later interference in the straight cost the winner Gay Lover, the race. Spearmeta raced away to the lead at barrier rise from Black Laughter, Gay Lover and Capris. Turning for home Gay Lover, Black Laughter and Capris were prominent. The last-named took charge at the distance but was immediately challenged by Gay Lover and in a desperate finish Gay Lover passed the post with a head advantage but lost the race due to interference in the straight. Silver Ring gave a splendid exhibition of his galloping ability in the Spring Stakes. Running in third position throughout he took charge a furlong from home and passed the judge with a length advantage, which perfromance greatly pleased his Metropolitan admirers. Sporting Blood enhanced his Metropolitan prospects, for, finishing with great dash, he secured third prize. WEATHER FINE FOR SECOND DAY PUBLIC HOLIDAY AT SYDNEY SATURDAY’S EVENTS REVIEWED (Received sth October, 11.45 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The weather is fine for the second day of the Randwick meeting. Today is a public holiday in Sydney, the Stock Exchange being closed. Gold Rod jarred a front joint during his running in the Derby and is not likely to start in the Melbourne Cup. Silver Jubilee broke down badly in the Epsom and there is doubt whether he will race again. “The Herald,” commenting on the principal races on Saturday, says that the Epsom was one of the most eventful in the long history of this important mile race. Gay Lover did not keep a straight course in the straight, veering out, apparently under pressure. Gay Lover and Capris provided a great duel, which ended so unsatisfactorily. Capris is the first mare to win the Epsom for 30 years. The Derby was marred by Shakespeare’s fall and by a change in tactics in the riding of Mala, which left the impression that the c'olt’s prospects have been prejudiced. Mala was not ridden with judgment and the race was made for Talking. Mala had Gold Rod beaten one and a half furlongs from the finish, but the effort took toll of his reserves and he fell an easy prey to Talking’s challenge. The Spring Stakes served to emphasise the superiority of the New Zealander Silver Ring and that the prospects of Sydney horses in winning any weight-for-age races at this meeting are not bright.
