HOW “MONKEY” NUTS GROW

The pea-nut, or “monkey” nut, as it is more is not to be found on trees. It grows in the same way as a potato, for the pods are attached to a thin fibrous root about eight inches under the soil. Many tons of these nuts are shipped from East Africa to Europe every year. India and China also export large quantities. As an article of food, “monkey” nuts were indispensable during the Great War, for the ration of “butter” served to the troops was largely composed of them. Many shiploads were sent to Italy and France. In the East they are very popular amongst the natives who enjoy a plate of “monkey” nuts, roasted in butter and salted.
