CHEESE CAUSES NAVAL MUTINY

The Mutiny at the Nore in 1797 was caused partly by—cheese. This was recalled by Sir Samuel Hoare, First Lord of the Admiralty, when addressing teachers in London,,.. Early in the eighteenth century there, was a statement as to the value of particular .cheeses for the Navy. It was to the effect that one-third of a pound of Cheshire cheese was equal to one pound of Suffolk cheese. What would appear to be a harmless reference to the individual taste of the sailors of that time, was one of the principal causes of the mutiny. The sailors, particularly those from Suffolk, much resented that there should be any differentiation against them.
