“THE BROKEN BACK OF THE SCHOOL”
(To ThT*Editor) Sir-Reading the “Nelsonian,” the magazine of Nelson College, I was forcibly struck by one of the original articles. Though not an Old Boy of the College I am a keen follower of some of its many activities. The article I mention was aptly called “The Broken Back of the School.” The writer appears to feel even as I do, somewhat ashamed of the old broken building. He states that since the earthquake approximately six generations, or 1000 boys have passed through the school. These hoys—they take away no cherished memories cf ivy clad towers and pillared walks but merely the easily forgotten thought of two old wings blocked up with great baulks of timber, empty and useless. Cannot we do something? We Nelsonians who are, or should be, proud to belong to the city which can boast one of the leading secondary schools of New Zealand; cannot we show the Minister of Education the deplorable state if disrepair into which the building has fallen and cannot we do our bit towards erecting an edifice of which we may feel justly proud? Then we may say that we have done something to reflect credit on us as Nelsonians.—l am. etc.. “NIJL BIEN SANS PEINE.” Nelson, 2nd October.
