CROQUET

VARIATIONS FOR PLAY

The English council has considered for some time past that the game of croquet has now got to the stage when some variation in the usual procedure | of play is necessary, and with a view I to making a change a special committee was set up to report on certain ! variations. This committee put for- ! ward several recommendations, the following being those chosen for trial:— ! Category A (scratch and minus players).—At the commencement of every turn a player shall be entitled to lift his ball and play it from either balk line, with the following modifi--1 cations:—(l) A lift (other than those 'resulting from wiring) cannot be taken I by a player if his adversary failed to I make either a point or a roquet in the I previous turn. (2) If a ball be pegged

'out all “lifts” (other than those resulting from wiring cease for both \ sides, except in the turn immediately jfollowing that in which the peg-out

occurred. (3) Alter present balk lines to balk lines from first corner.to the centre west boundary, and from third corner to centre of east boundary. (4) Suspend operation of law 44. Any tournament desiring to adopt this variation in a first-class event need not restrict the upper limit of such event to scratch.

Category C (players at 9 bisques or over). —In level events arranged exclusively for C category players all competitors shall be allowed to use the number of bisques corresponding to the lowest limit of the handicaps to which the event is restricted. (Thus in an event • o flO and over, each player may use 10 bisques.) Handicap Singles for All Categories. —ln handicap singles for A. B. and C categories each player shall be entitled to the actual number of bisques at which he or she is handicapped, less 5.

As an example (writes “Concentrate”’ 7-bisquer playing a 12-bisquer would have two bisques while his opponent would have seven. When the subtraction of five from a player’s handicap leads to a minus quantity the play is, as now, simply the difference in bisques.
