WOMEN’S CRICKET

THE NELSON ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING HELD REVIEW OF PAST YEAR'S ACTIVITIES The annual general meeting of the Nelson Women’s Cricket Association was presided over by the president, Airs E. Turley, there being a good attendance.

The lion, secretary (.Miss L. Howard) submitted the following report on the year’s activities: —

“I have much pleasure in presenting the annual report of the Nelson Women’s Cricket Association for season 1935-1935. “The Association was fortunate in enjoying a successful season both socially and financially. It was with regret that we witnessed the departure for Auckland of two of our most enthusiastic members—Aliss E. Burdon, our secretary, and Aliss I).' AlaGrath, our representative team captain. We only hope they will be successful in their new venture, and what is our loss is Auckland’s gain. “While mentioning enthusiastic members, I must mention our worthy patron, Airs B. II Moller, whose unfailing interest in ladies’ cricket in Nelson has done more, in furthering the interests of the sport than we can possibly say. Her presentation of the Championship Rose Bowl in our first, year and a Run-ners-up Cup last season made the players more keen to do their best and help their team gain possession of the covetied trophy, and so we can thank Airs Moller for helping to improve the standard of play. ‘AVe were fortunate in being able to send a representative team to Wellington last season, and although Wellington proved a far superior team, Nelson had the advantage of playing a more experienced team and therefore gaining valuable assistance. "Marlborough visited Nelson for a. friendly match, and in this respect the local girls proved themselves superior in every way. Wo returned the visit later on in the season, and the Association hopes that ladies’ cricket will he a little bit more firmly established in the Marlborough district as a result. “Nelson were also fortunate in having a visit from a Canterbury team, and they, too, like the Wellington team, proved far superior to the Nelson team. Once again, though, the local team gained valuable experience, and it is to be hoped that this year the Association Will be able to raise sufficient funds to return Canterbury’s visit. It would be of great advantage in furthering the interests of ladies’ cricket in Nelson if

the Canterbury-Nelson matches were a yearly Easter event. “Trathen's Club is to be congratulated on their very fine performance in winning the Championship last season, and it should be a lesson to every team to note the way the champion team improved their standard of play through bard and constant practice and good coaching.

"The Association also wishes to congratulate the Nelson Club, who have been unfortunate in missing the Championship for two seasons by only one point, but who put up a very fine display this year in gaining second place ancl being the proud recipients of the Runners-up Cup in its first year of presentation. “The committee of the Association are to be congratulated on their very creditable balance-sheet, and if the incoming committee woiks as diligently there should lie no difficulty whatsoever in sending a representative team to Canterbury at Easter. “In conclusion, the committee wish (o thank the “Nelson Evening ALiil” for their valuable assistance with publications, our presidents, Airs Turley, for her interest and over-ready help; the selectors, Messrs Ilobern Grimmoß. and Betts; Air C. Kinzett. for his valuable assistance as coach of the repviseiitative team ; Mrs Horncasi.le. for her kindness at ill times; and all those who have helped to make this past season a very successful and happy one. We also greatly appreciate Miss A. Bunion’s generosity for allowing the Association the free use of her meet-ing-room. The report and balancesheet were adopted.
