BELFRY BUT NO BELLS

From the tower of the new church of St. Saviour, at Ilford, near Bournemouth, the parishioners will soon be hearing peals of bells, although the

belfry will be minus bells. The tower will be equipped with loud-speakers and an amplifying apparatus, which will be used to sound peals of bells recorded on gramophone records. The same equipment will be used to amplify the small reed organ in the church, so that the tones of a fullpipe organ can be produced a't a strength more than adequate for the needs of services. Loud-speakers are to be installed in the church for the purpose. The loud-speakers and the amplifying apparatus can be used to relay broadcasts of any special national services. It will also be possible for the Bishop of the diocese, sitting in his place at Winchester, to preach a sermon to St. Saviour’s parishioners by means of a telephone line.
