STATEMENT CHALLENGED
CONCERNING NEW ZEALAND’S FIRST FOOTBALL CLUB CLAIMS OF CHRISTCHURCH '' FORWARDED (By Telegraph—Press Association) WELLINGTON, This Day. A statement made in a recent letter to the New Zealand Rugby Union by Mr K. C. Tennent, of Woodville, concerning the formation of the 'first Rugby football club in the Dominion is challenged by a newspaper correspondent,- who says: “Mr Tennent is wrong in saying that the club he assisted to form in Nelson in 1868 was the first, football, club in New Zealand. The J Christchurch Football Club was formed in 1863. This club lost its records for the first four years, so it dates its career from 1867, when the existing records began.” The correspondent adds that confirmation is to be found in old newspaper files of the 'sixties. Actually, football was played' at Christchurch and Lyttelton in 1862 and rules for the game were drawn up at Christ’s College that year.
