MAORI FOOTBALLER’S DEATH
EVIDENCE AT INQUEST (United Press Association) PALMERSTON N., 25th September. Bernard Edward Rogers, a member of the New Zealand Maori Rugby team, died in hospital yesterday afternoon.
It appears that the deceased and Hawea *Mataira, of Wairoa, another member of the team, had an argument as to the ownership of an Australian souvenir, a jersey, and that during 1 a scuffle Rogers fell on a concrete floor and received head injuries.
The funeral will take place at Rotorua.
An inquest was held to-day. William T. Parata, selector of the Maori representatives, gave evidence of identification. He said he last saw Rogers alive at 8 o’clock on Wednesday evening. He was in his usual state of health, but in a semi-drunken condition. This was upstairs at the Cafe de Paris Hotel. “I was surprised to see him in that condition,” added the witness, “beause I did not know he drank. I left the hotel, but about an hour later was notified of an accident at the hotel involving one of the players. I immediately returned to the hotel, but by this time the injured man had been taken to the hospital. I was informed of what had taken place. I witnessed the football match during the afternoon, and the deceased was not injured during the match as far as I know.” The inquest was adjourned sine die.
