ADVANCE NELSON

(To The Editor) Sir,—On the closely related themes of “Reclaiming the Mudflat,” “Filling the Gap” and “Improving Nelson’s Front Door,” the writer has penned (during the past 30 or 50 years or so), sufficient letters “to load a cart as the late lamented Judge Jeffreys once observed to Richard Baxter. Each of these letters are as full of the germ of progress and pushfulness as an egg is full of meat. Yet, tangible results, hitherto, have been (apparently) nil. Very recent developments however go to prove the value of persistence and perseverance. Encouraged by Scriptural admonitions, I have “kept on keeping on.” Be not weary in well doing, for in due time ye shall reap if ye faint not.” “Cast your bread upon the waters and ye shall find it after many days.” Patience, perseverance, persistence, are definitely inculculated in the Inspired Word. Literally I cash my bread (and butter) on the mudflat —with no visible sign of return or reward till even now. If the proposed reclamation of this 100 acres—providing spaces for show grounds, race courses and playing areas—materialises into actual fact the writer will have good cause to feel that his sustained efforts have not been wholly in vain. I think we can feel pretty sure the present Government will aid this scheme. To me in this respect, they seem to be more hopeful than any have been of their pre-decessors (so far as Nelson’s interest and definite progress are concerned) during the past half century. As “money is being poured out like water” it is up to us to see we get a fair share of it. It will be spent anyhow and it will be eminently wise to “seize time by the forelock’” and get in “on the first floor.” Procrastination has proved to be a real robber “in the years that the locusts have eaten.” So get going in earnest, now.—I am etc.
