GIANT ’PLANE THAT FLIES ON CRUDE OIL
GERMAN MACHINE OVER LONDON (By Aii* Mail—From A Special Correspondent' LONDON. 22nd August. Here is an account of a flight over London this week of the new giant, bat-like German aeroplane which is driven by four 750 h.p. Diesel engines. It is called he von Hinbenburg and is the last word in heavy-oil machines, which uses crude oil and so offers a new fire safety factor in aviation. “My guide motioned me into one of the two observation cabins which are built in the wing” said one who made the flight. “While the remainder of the wing is of corrugated metal the observation cabins, which each seat two people are made of glass-stream-lined to the shape of the wing. “We passed up a flight of stairs into a cabin and down another flight into a second cabin, which gives the machine a total seating capacity of 34 with additional accommodation for the crew of seven. “The machine has a span of 146 ft. a cruising speed of 131 m.p.h. a landing, speed of only 75 m.p.h. and a range of eight hours or over 1,000 miles. The crude oil fuel costs only 9d a gallon compared with As 6c! for petrol.”
