MAUD CREEK FATALITY
elderly miner killed in CLAIM INQUEST ON THE VICTIM (Prom Our Own Correspondent) MURCHISON, 25th September. Further particulars of the death on Monday last as the result of an accident at Maud Creek, of Mr Alexander Samuel Sargison, a miner, 72 years of age, show that the deceased was working in his claim with his partnt-, when for some unknown reason a log which was lying on the terrace above them, slipped down from the face, striking him on the chest and knocking him backwards. He fell on a large boulder against which his head struck heavily, and was killed almost instantaneously. An inquest was held at the Howard Junction the following day, the verdict being that the deceased met his death through being accidently sthuck by a sliding log. The late Mr Sargison was a native of Charleston, and was held in high esteem by a large circle of friends both at the Maud Creek, m Nelson and on the West Coast, where the greater part of his early life was spent. On the West Coast he followed his occupation as a baker, a later as a jeweller, and he was well known in musical About 20 years ago he came to the Howard district, where he had been engaged in mining until the time of his death. The deceased was a married ma , and is survived by his widow and an adult family. ~, o , K . The body was removed on Wednes day from the Howard Junction to Hokitika, where the funeral will take place.
