HITCH AT PALMERSTON NORTH COUNCIL’S WATER SUPPLY • SCHEME (United Press Association' PALMERSTON N., 22iul September. A communication was recently received by the Palmerston North City Council from the Department of Labour advising that approval would be given to a subsidy of 20 per cent, from the employment promotion fund on the larger water supply scheme, proposed at an estimated cost of £112,144. conditional upon certain other subsidised works being also commenced at an early date.
Last night the council confirmed a resolution passed in committee a week ago, that the department be reminded that, a definite unconditional offer of a subsidy on the original water supply ischeme at a cost of £89,000 had been received, and that the council was not prepared to proceed with the larger proposal on the conditions outlined, and also that it was desired to prosecute a •scheme !o which the ratepayers could reasonably be expected to give their approval and which would absorb (he largest number of labourers from tile ranks of the unemployed ; that the other
subsidised work mentioned by the department in connection with the Kawau stream and stormwater conduits was proposed to be proceeded with at a later date.
