RIWAKA

BULB SHOW EXCELLENT BLOOMS (From Our Own Correspondent) The annual bulb show, under the auspices of the Ladies’ Guild of the Riwaka Presbyterian Church, was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall when there was a large attendance of the public at both the afternoon and evening sessions. An outstanding feature of the show was the excellence of the exhibits in the bulb section, the blooms of which there were a greater number than usual being practically without exception, large, clean flawless specimens. NEVER BETTER Mr Day, who judged the bulb section, remarked that in his twenty-five years’ experience of judging, he could not recall an occasion when he had

been asked to adjudicate on a better collection of blooms.

Mr Dobbie’s “Renown” was placed first in the Trumpet class; and this bloom also had the distinction of being awarded the Champion of Champions’ prize. An excellent specimen of “Nillumbik,” exhibited by Mr R. P. Cook was adjudged the champion i» the Incomparabilis section, and a fine bloom “Silver Dawn,” also grown by Mr Cook gained, first place in the Leedsii section.

AN EXCELLENT DISPLAY The Rev. H. Bloomfield, who officially opened the show, apologised for the unavoidable absence of Mr K. J. Holyoake M.P. and for the Braeburn Ladies’ Guild. He remarked on the excellent display of flowers, especially in the bulb sections,, the very high standard of which had been favourably commented upon by the judge, Mr Day. Mr Bloomfield, on behalf of the Ladies’ Guild, thanked the public for their attendance and interest in the show and expressed the hope that the splendid blooms to be seen in the hall would encourage others to become exhibitors next season. The judges were Mr Day of Nelson (bulb sections), Mrs S. B. Dobbie (decorative), Mr G. H. Budden (miscellaneous), and Mesdames G Manifold and Marshall (fancy work). Produce and sweet stalls were wellladen with attractive wares, which found a ready sale. Good business was also done in the afternoon tea department. Stall holders were Mesdames E. Askew, E. C. Thomson, W. Marshall and Bible Class helpers (afternoon teas); Mrs R. Bate, Mr S. M. Askew and helpers (produce stall); Misses J. Scott, M. Sparks and G. McLean sweet stall. Secretarial duties in connection with the show were in the capable hands of Mrs E. Sparks. PRIZE LIST « POT PLANTS Primula, any variety: Miss D. Scott 1. Foliage plant: Mrs L. G. Duncan 1, Miss D. FIGHT COLDS WITH PULMONAS Doctors will tell you that inhaling (the Pulmonas principle) is the most effective method of preventing and banishing sore throats, ’flu, coughs and colds. Pulmonas obtainable at chemists and stores, 1/-, 1/6, 2/6.
