CAPTAIN OF THE MARAMA

CONDITION SATISFACTORY AFTER OPERATION VESSEL GOING FULL-SPEED FOR WELLINGTON (United Press Association— By Electrio Telegraph—Copyright) SYDNEY, 12th September. A wireless message received here last night read; “Captain Kane’s condition is satisfactory.” From this it is deduced that Dr. Mercer, the Marama’s surgeon, had operated on Captain Kane without the assistance of Dr. Sweeney, of the Niagara. The chief officer, Mr T. Bevan, who took over the command of the Marama when Captain Kane became ill, wirelessed that owing to rising sea he was unable to reach the Niagara, consequently the Marama was heading direct for Wellington at top speed.

A message received on Saturday stated that Captain Kane had developed acute appendicitis, and that the assistance of the surgeon of the Niagara was being sought.
