SUPPLY OF FRUIT CASES'
PORTION MAY HAVE TO BE SOUGHT OVERSEAS
“Considerable trouble has been experienced this year in the Nelson and other districts with regard to obtaining supplies of dry export cases up to time,” states the annual report of the New Zealand Fruitgrowers’ Federation, presented to the Nelson provincial conference this morning. “We know that here again the vagaries of the weather have hindered millers, but nevertheless, the duty of your directors is to see that the fruitgrow- | ing industry is adequately supplied ! with cases. It is possible that the | time is not far distant when your directors will again have to seek at least a portion of the yearly supply from overseas. It may be that this is against the policy of the present Government, and if such proves to be the case, then the fruitgrowing industry has the right to demand from the box-making industry a guarantee of an adequate supply of quality cases at a reasonable price. Selling our fruit in competition with all other countries exporting a similar product, to maintain our supremacy, we must have the best article packed in the most attractive package procurable. A case is not just enough. We must have the best case—a case equal to that used by other fruit-exporting countries. It may be said that the buyer is not interested in the case, but in modern merchandising the package does create an impression with the buyer, no. matter what the article is. We must follow the lead of those who merchandise their products in a modern way.”
