INTERNAL AIR MAILS
£4OO LOSS IN THREE MONTHS ’■a tTrfOwW *v - , , - (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The cost to the country of the internal air-mail service was revealed to-day by the Postmaster-Genefal (the Hon. F. Jones), when answering representations made to him, by a deputation from the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce. During the first three months’ trial between 16th March and 16th June, said the Minister, the Department had lost £4OO, but he did not anticipate that such a loss would be incurred during the current three months’ extra trial which had been decided on.
The arrangement, with Union Airways, Ltd., was that the company took the whole of the surcharge. Owing to the small number of letters the Department was unable to dictate to Union Airways on the time-table question. The greater part of the company’s revenue came from passengers. If the air mail increased enormously it might be possibel to make some fr.esh agreement. The present timetable was a winter One, and the safety of the passengers-was paramount. “If you worked it out cm a poundage basis,” said jVfr l Jones, “you might say it was too dear, but the company has to go to a lot of trouble in collecting and delivering the mail, so that there is not much in it.”
