ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL
THISTLE V. Y.M.C.A. Thistle and Y.M.C.A. met in the first of this season’s Cup semi-finals at Victory Square. The weather was fine with a light breeze, and a good attendance. Y.M.C.A. were under strength and Thistle made no mistake by winning by 6 goals to 3. Thistles young backs, although lacking in experience, played very well, and are , improving every game. Mr J. Patterson was the referee. The following '.were the teams: — , I Thistle: M. Cuthbert, Meehan, i Large, BoVey, J. Du Feu, RichaiaSgg;Thistle kicked off, and Knight re--ceiving made ground on the" left, "arid squared a good ball. Campbell Ahot over the bar. Ferguson and Campbell were combining well for Thistle
against the light breeze, Y.M.C.A. being slow to settle down. In a Y.M.C.A. attack J. Du Feu tried a shot which carried wide. Back came Thistie and Knight, receiving from Ferguson, opened the scoring with a good shot, Kirby making a great effort to. save. Thistle 1, Y.M.C.A. 0. With this reverse Y.M.C.A. at-acted' strongly, the Du Feu brothers ’ combining well, but J. Du Feu struck the cross bar with a good shot. However, in the next attack by Thistle Knight sent over a nice ball for Sexton to notch the second goal. Thistle Y.M.C.A. 0. , - J. Cuthbert was playing a sound defensive game, but the play general y was not up to the usual standard, corner to Y.M.C.A. was not' improved on, J. Du Feu heading narrowly over
the bar. Midfield play ensued until A. Du Feu accepted a good , pass and opened Y.M.C.A.’s account. Thistle 2, Y.M.C.A. 1. In a strong attempt to level the score Y.M.C.A. attacked but J. Du ' Feu was drawn up for an infringement. Receiving from Sexton, Smith, on Thistle’s right wing,, took the ban v/ell down, but war repulsed by C.arK. Mayers returned the ball well, Ferguson missing with a likely shot. Richards, on Y.M.C.A.’s left, made ground, but Meehan dashed in and kicked into touch. From the throW-in JCuthbert sent a long kick to Campbell who bustled his way into Y.M.C.A. goel area, but Hobern kicked clear Y.M.C.A. were playing 'better, and Thistle’s young backs were showing up well, but J. Du Feu) accepted a good chance and levelled the scores. Y.M.C.A. 2, Thistle 2. j
Thistle made a valiant attempt to penetrate Y.M.C.A.’s goal but Kirby ran out and kicked clear. Not to be denied, in the next raid Thistle went further ahead, Campbell scoring from a penalty. Thistle 3, Y.M.C.A. 2. Cuthbert, in Thistle’s goal, was subjected to a bombardment but saved well from O. Du. Feu. Half-time arrived with the score Thistle 3, Y.M.C.A. 2. .On resuming Eastabrook gained possession and passed on to Richards who squared nicely, but Large cleared from O. Du Feu, and Ferguson taking advantage of a slip by a Y.M.C.A. defender carried on to score. Thistle 4, Y.M.C.A. 2. Thistle’s backs were showing up well and Large dashed into goal when Cuthbert was beaten and saved an-al-most certain goal, A, Du Feu shooting well. The attack was ; short-lived as 'Camobell and Ferguson raided Y.M/C>A’s goql, the former sending in a rocket shot, and Kirby had. no chance to save. A few minutes later Campbell repeated the effort from close in. Thistle 6, Y.M.C.A. 2. After a series of corners for Thistle Clark sent J. Du Feu away and he passed to O. Du Feu. Cuthbert saved the latter’s shot but was penalised for carrving the ball too far, and A. Du Feu “scored. Y.M.C.A. 3, Thistle 6. Two corners, in quick succession fell to Thistle but were not improved on. Play slackened a bit and there was no further scoring, Thistle emerging victorious by 6 goals to 3.
