“IF YOU COULD ONLY COOK”

UNIQUE COMPETITION MAJESTIC THEATRE, GAS SHOWROOMS AND PLUNKET SOCIETY A unique and profitable cooking competition has been organised by the combined efforts of the Majestic Theatre, Nelson City Council Gas Showrooms, and the Plunket Society in connection with the sparkling comedy romance, “If You Could Only Cook,” featuring Herbert Marshall and Jean Arthur, which will provide the main screen entertainment at the Majestic on Saturday.

In order to ascertain who can cook the finest sponge cake, best selection of small cakes (12) and biscuits, the Nelson City Council Showroom has generously donated a new “Osborne” Gas Cooker, valued at £ 19 10s for the first prize, based on the aggregate points scored in the three sections of the cooking competition. First and second prizes will be awarded for each section and a total of forty prizes in all, will be allocated for the various entries for all sections, many of which have been donated by city business houses.

Entry is free and application forms may be obtained from the Majestic Theatre, J. R. McKenzie’s, N.C.C. Gas Showrooms, J. Wood and Sons, Workers’ Co-operative Society. In order to assist the Plunket Society, a condition is stipulated that all entries are to become the property of the society. The judging will take place on Saturday afternoon, and the Mayor, Mr G. L. Page, has consented to announce the winners on Saturday during the performance of “If You Could Only Cook.” All cakes, etc., will be put up for auction and spirited bidding is anticipated. It is hoped that in this manner that a substantial fund wfill be raised which will be handed over to the Plunket Society in order to augment the funds to complete the proposed women’s rest room.

Additional interest is also provided fo “Those Who Can’t Cook” in another interesting competition which is being conducted in conjunction with “If You Could Only Cook” cooking competition, on the use of a Beatty Washing Machine. The public are invited to participate in what will prove a profitable pastime by expressing their written belief in a letter not exceeding 100 words, on the merit and value of a modern washing machine in the home. A further cash prize will also be awarded for the most genuine application for - a demonstration of a Beatty Washing Machine in their home. Applications and competitions and competitors’ letters addressed, sole distributing agent, Beatty Washing Machine, c/o Majestic Theatre, must be sent in as soon as possible. All entries closed after midday Saturday, 27th June. Results will be announced together with successful entrants in the cooking competition.
