NATIONAL SAVINGS

INCREASE IN DEPOSITS more banks opened (British Oilicial Wireless) RUGBY, 18th June. In a letter to the annual conference of the Trustee Savings Banks Association, Mr Neville Chamberlain, Chancellor of the Exchequer, notes that the past year has been marked by a further substantial increase not only in deposits but in the number of depositors, particularly in the ordinary departments which are the backbone of the savings banks system. Co-opera-tion between banks and other partners in the national savings movement lias continued to be close and fruitful.

“The new Trustee Banks which were established under the Savings Bank Act of 1929,” adds the Chancellor, “have made good progress. During the last year three new banks were established and no fewer than 28 branches opened by the existing banks.
