MAGISTRATE’S COURT

BREACHES OF MOTOR REGULATIONS As a result of raids by the police and traffic inspectors there was _ a large number of people in the Magistrate’s Court this morning charged with breaches of the motor regulations. The cases were heard before Messrs W. Lock and C. M. Collins, J.’sP. , , The following were convicted for driving without a license, on the prosecution of the police: J. M. Docherty, fined 10s and costs 10s; Donald S. Max 10s and costs 12s; William Gill 10s and costs 10s, and for having only one light, convicted and discharged; John Charters was convicted and discharged; C. Goodman 10s and costs 10s; A. Birkett 10s and costs 10s; Jack Bennett, convicted and discharged; J. A. Taylor 10s and costs 10s; Sidney C. Thomas 10s and costs 12s. Thomas was convicted and discharged for driving an unlicensed motor lorry. Sergeant W. H. Simister pointed out that the public had no protection under third party insurance if a car was not re-licensed. The police brought the following prosecutions for riding cycles without lights: Arthur Conway, fined 10s and costs 10s; Jack Puklowski, two offences. 10s on each case without costs; Frank Hall, 10s and costs 10s. Jack Christall, 10s and costs 10s, Flora Devanny, ss; William C. Devanny, 10s and costs 10s; Eric Greeves, 10s and costs 10s; Gilbert Priest, 10s and costs 10s; G. Mechen, 10s and costs 10s; Edgar Graves, 10s and costs 10s; Edward Davy, 10s and costs 10s. For driving a car with only one headlight A. Forster was fined £1 and costs 10s, L. R. Cameron on a similar charge was fined 10s and costs 10a. James Pawson, for driving without proper lights, was fined 10s and costs 10s, and James A. Anderson, for parking a car without lights, was fined 10s and costs 10s. > „ , . Traffic Inspector C. E. Parkinson brought the following cases, die offenders being charged with driving without a license: B. Batersby, 10s and costs 10s; L. Marsack, 10s and costs 10s; W. C. Holland, 10s and costs 10s; A Pannell, convicted and discharged, and for cutting a corner, finedl £1 and costs 10s; C. H. Noble- Campbell, 10s and costs 12s; Robert Sim, 10s and costs 10s. ... For driving at a speed which might have been dangerous to the public T. J Leighs was fined £1 and costs 10s. 'Traffic Inspector Parkinson stated that the defendant drove past the intersection of Russell street and Haven road at between 35 and 40 m.p.h. Ihe limit for intersections was 15 m.p.h. The Bench stressed the fact of the 15 m.p.h. limit and said it was probably hot generally known. L. Haworth, on a similar charge, was fined £1 and costs 10s. The following prosecutions were brought by Traffic Inspector J. T. Brough;— , . . ... For driving a motor vehicle with only one light, lan McCrae was fined 10s and costs 10s. The traffic inspector said that they had been specially requested to a stop to these “one-eyed Lord Nelsons,” as they were called. For riding a cycle without a light, his second offence. A. Schwass was fined £1 and costs.
