Strong criticism of the police system of obtaining confessions of accused persons and using them in evidence was uttered by. the Chief Justice Sir F. W. Mann. Stating that the examination by police of persons in custody may be and often is, carried to a most undesirable excess, His Honour suggested that the powers of the police should be "greatly curtailed.
