The Napier Borough Council wrote stating that its outside staff had requested the Council to take the initial steps in promoting a scheme for the formation of a Local Body Employees’ Union throughout New Zealand. The Council was strongly in favour of the proposal to have one union for Borough employees, as at present their employees were covered by approximately ten unions, thus making for a great deal of confusion in administration. The writers had requested the Municipal Association to take the necessary steps to enable one union covering all municipal workers to be formed and the Motueka Council s support in this direction was solicited. Councillor Eginton moved that no action be taken; but the motion was not seconded. It was resolved (the Mayor and Councillor Fry) that consideration bo deferred until next meeting. The Secretary of the Motueka District High School Committee wrote asking the Council for sufficient crusher dust to form a floor for the recently erected bicycle rack at the school. The rack it was stated, was supplying a long felt want for the children, and the committee would greatly appreciate it, if the Council could supply the dust free, the committee to pay cartage. On the motion of Councillors Fry and Simpson it was decided that the School Committee be informed that the Council had no crusher dust, at present, but will supply same when it is available. The Lyttelton Harbour Board forwarded circular letter inviting the cooperation of the Motueka Borough Council in organising a South Island of New Zealand Travel Association, on the lines of the Australian National Travel Association, to foster, develop and maintain the tourist and travel business attractions and amenities of the South Island and to generally further its interests. H. A. Quayle, Borough sexton, applied to the Council for an increase in wages to 16s per adult interment and stated that if the increase was not granted he would tender his resignation, to take effect as from 30th June. It was resolved (the Mayor and Councillor Simpson) that Mr Quayle’s resignation be accepted, that applications be called for the position of sexton and that the matter be dealt with by the Finance Committee. J. Mac. G. Inglis wrote stating that he intended to subdivide into residental sections that portion of his property fronting on to High street, by running a road from High street down the centre of the property for approximately 12 chains. The writer pointed out that the southern end of Saxon street terminated on his northern boundary and also that the northern end of Vosper street terminated on the southern boundary of Mr J. A. Smith’s property. Mr Inglis stated, in the letter, that Mr Smith and he were prepared to give the necessary land to enable Vosper and Saxon streets to be linked up, subject to certain conditions. A proposed | plan of the sub-division was also forwarded. It was decided, on the motion of Councillor Fry and the Mayor, that the matter be referred to the Works Committee to bring down a report at the next meeting of the Council. Pitt and Moore wrote stating that some years ago the Borough Council closed portion of Greenwood street and sold same to the adjoining owners. The District Land Registrar required proof that the seventh schedule of the Municipal Corporations Act 1908 had i been complied with when the portion ! of Greenwood street referred to had | been closed. This proof was required , by the District Land Registrar before he would issue Land Transfer Titles I to the purchasers of the closed road, j The Council was asked to verify if the seventh Schedule had been complied j with. , It was resolved (the Mayor and ; Councillor Trewavas) that Messrs ; Pitt and Moore be notified that, as ! far as the Council is concerned all requests in connection with the Act

were complied with, when portion of Greenwood street was sold to adjoining owners. It was decided that the report of the Public Services Committee be adopted, including a recommendation that the salary of the caretaker of the Institute Hall be increased. On the motion of the Mayor and Councillor Park it was decided that the matter of the removal of trees at the aerodrome be referred to the chairman of the Works’ Committee and the Foreman, with power to act. It was agreed (the Mayor and Councillor Simpson) that Mr Clay be thanked for cutting his fence line back and providing greater visibility at the corner of High street and Poole street on the southern side. It was also agreed, on the motion of Councillor Fry and the Mayor, that the Reserves Committee be asked to bring down an estimate and recommendation regarding cost of same, for erecting a small stand at the Cricket Ground, from the timber derived from the Domain. The Foreman reported that he had inspected pine trees at the foreshore and had found that three were dead. It was decided that the matter of removal of the trees in question be referred to the chairman of the Works Committee and the Foreman, with power to act. It was also decided (Councillors Fry and Park) that the Foreman be authorised to procure a concrete pole for erection at the Fire Brigade Station, and to construct the concrete trough as requested. Messrs T. A. and F. Anderson’s tender for the supply of sanitary appliances for the Borough, at a cost of £l2B 15s was accepted. The Council went into committee to discuss sanitary matters. -The Town Clerk was instructed to draw the Health Inspector’s attention to the fact that there were a number of business places in the borough, without sanitary services.

FOREMAN’S REPORT The Foreman Mr W. Anderson, reported as follows: “Pothole patching has been carried out on the west end of Poole street. Blinding from the Lime Works has been placed on Queen Victoria street from Green Lane to Whakarewa street and the same rolled and graded, but further work will have to be clone before it is completed. The concrete kerbing in High street, from Poole street to Whakarewa street, is nearly completed. The crossings have yet to be installed. A. pipe drain running down the centre of the footpath in front of Mr Reg Rowling’s and Mr Clay’s property has been taken up and repaired and a concrete sump put in. As the whole of the drain was blocked up with mud, this will improve the drainage in that locality. The aerodrome hedge is being trimmed, the frontage cleaned; and the gorse on the foreshore is being cut. The formation of the footpath in King Edward street is still being' carried out.
