LOWER MOUTERE

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE (From Our Own Correspondent) At the annual meeting of the Lower Moutere Women’s Institute, the balance sheet presented showed a satisfactory financial position. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mrs Starnes; vicepresident, Mrs Mcßrydie; secretary, Mrs Rosenberg (re-elected); committee, Mesdames Starnes, Mcßrydie, Ben. Mcßrydie, Rosenberg, Misses R. Tasker, and R. Richards. The secretary’s report was as follows: “The second year of the Lower Moutere W.I. proved to be quite a busy and happy one. On 23rd May we celebrated our first birthday by holding a dance in the Jubilee Hall. Members from the Motueka and Wakefield branches and from the Upper Moutere and Motueka W.D. F.U. attended the function. Throughout the winter quite a number of dances were held in the Jubilee Hall and the proceeds' from these were used to buy cretonne for the making of five eider-down quilts for three families. A donation was also sent to the Children’s Health Camp, and to Mrs Taylor when her house was burnt down. A pajcel of garment was also purchased. “Demonstrations have been given in the knitting and making of toys, eider down quilts from cretonne and sheep’s wool, the making of floor rugs from old silk stocking and patch quilts. At our annual meeting last year Mrs Rolatt gave a most interesting talk on her travels in other countries. Mrs Woodley was our delegate to the council meeting at Tahuna and was elected to go to Takaka in October but was unable to attend. Miss Morrison was the delegate to the Dominon Conference at Auckland in July, and she sent us a very interesting report of the meeting and of the various places of interest visited. During the year our branch had a number of invitations from other institutes to their birthday parties and also from the W.D.F.U. Members attended these whenever possible, and on all occasions had a most enjoyable time., A Christmas tree was provided for the children of the district up to the age of nine. This proved a great success, each child receiving a toy and a bag of sweets and nuts from the tree. Races were run and games played and afternoon tea was served to the children and the mothers. “The January meeting took the form of a picnic in one of Mr Woodley’s paddocks and a happy time was spent. It was decided not to hold meetings in February and March as during these months members are busy apple, tobacco and hop-picking and are unable to attend. “The meetings have been most enjoyable, and we now have nineteen financial members. “It is with regret we learn that Mrs Woodley is not standing- for re-elec-tion as president. A hearty vote of thanks is due to her for the time and thought devoted to the getting together of the ‘Pioneer Tales,’ to be forwarded for the competition. * "Mrs Mcßrydie was the winner of the competitions prize again this year. Very good work has been done each month in the competitions. At the Motueka A. and P. Show a third prize was won for the hand work display. We also had a parcel of seeds from the Surrey Garden of Friendship (England). These were distributed among members. “On 27th May the second birthday was celebrated by the holding of a party at the residence of Mrs G. Starnes, whore members and friends spent an enjoyable afternoon. Competitions, a treasure hunt and nail-

driving competitions were included in the programme, also songs contributed by Master Dick Warner, which were much appreciated.*' A dainty afternoon tea was served and the birthday cake cut and handed round. Good business was done at the jumble stall. The singing o fthe National Anthem brought a happy and successful party to a close.”
