A forty-foot whale which swam into the Richmond River caused a sensation when it collided with the ferry cables at Broadwater, while a ferry was in midstream, causing it to rock violently. Broadwater is 16 miles from the river mouth. The whale became stranded on the mud flats. Attempts made to Shoot it failed, the bullets making no impression. The whale later got back into deep water and was last seen heading for sea.
