SIR JAMES BARRIE
HIS 76th BIRTHDAY (By Air Mail—From Our Own Correspondent) LONDOON, 14th May. Sir James Barrie was 76 on Saturday. He does not look it, despite the fact that he has recently suffered the indignity of eviction from his beloved home in the Adelphi. A delightful and whimsical post-prandial orator, he can rarely be prevailed upon nowadays to perform. Last October he presided at a dinner of the Authors’ Club, of which he is president; and the assembly anticipated with eagerness one of his scintillating addresses. It was not forthcoming. He aroused expectation by solemnly stating that he felt the oratorical urge creeping over him. The audience congratulated themselves that the moment had arrived, and that he was going to tell them “What every woman knows.” But Sir James rang the bell which closes proceedings at the Authors’, looked reproachfully at it, and remarked that the bell had defeated him. One of the penalties of advancing years is the constant loss of contemporary friends, and Sir James is no exception. Last January he was saddened by the passing of Rudyard Kipling.
