MOTUEKA

CALEDONIAN SOCIETY ANNUAL MEETING (From Our Own Correspondent) Mr T. D. Milne, Chief of the Motueka Caledonian Society, presided at the annual meeting in the Presbyterian Church Hall. Those present were Messrs J. T. Brough, W. Foote, H. Stanton, A. Douglas, J. Hume, J. O. Anderson, H. Douglas, W. J. Bruning and B. Warren. Apologies for absence were tendered on behalf of Messrs W. H. Green and J. Willox (Takaka) and B. McLaren and V. James (Moteuka). Reports presented by the Chief (Mr Milne) and the secretary (Mr Stanton) were adopted on the motion of Messrs Hume and A. Douglas. The balance sheet, which disclosed a cash credit of £l2 2s 8d and assets over liabilities of £59 8s Bd, was also adopted. Mr P. B. Calder was proposed for membership and duly elected.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS Office bearers elected for the ensuing year were:—President, Mr T. D. Milne (re-elected); vice-president, Mr H. Douglas; secretary and treasurer, Mr B. McLaren; executive committee, Messrs J. Hume, J. O. Anderson, A. Douglas, B. Warren, W. J. Bruning, J. Topp, W. Foote, W. Mclntosh, A. J. Tarleton, J. Robertson, V. James, T. Kenning, P. B. Calder, J. T. Brough, J. Willox, J. J. Satherley; convener, Mr J. T. Brough (re-elected); PipeMajor, Mr J. Topp (re-elected). Mr Milne, in returning thanks for his re-election as chief, said he was very pleased to have the continued confidence of the members and would do his best to further the interests of the Motueka Society, in cementing friendships among the Scottish people and the people of Scotch descent in the district. He was pleased the society had progressed, during the past year, and hoped it would still continue in this way. The gathering at the New Year had been a most enthusiastic function, and one could infer that the increasing number of counter attractions at this time, would not altogether detract from the success of gatherings in the future. The New Year concert had also been a success. Mr Milne expressed appreciation of the enthusiasm and co-operation displayed by members of the executive, particularly in connection with the New Year functions. Mr Hume paid a tribute to the excellent services rendered to the society by the convener, Mr Brough. The Chief and Mr Bruning also spoke of the good work done by the convener. Mr Brough urged members to cooperate, so that success would continue to attend the gatherings and Inglesides. The secretary’s honorarium was fixed at £lO per annum. The appointment of a ladies’ committee was left to the convener. On the motion of Messrs Bruning and A. Douglas, it was decided that a gathering and concert be held at Motueka on Ist January, 1937. After a full discussion, as to the advisability of holding gatherings at Takaka, it was finally resolved (Messrs Anderson and Foote) that no gathering be held at Takaka next year. Mr Hume considered that members had been swayed entirely by the financial results at Takaka and had not enquired sufficiently into the reasons. He favoured a further effort being made, and recorded his vote against the motion. The convener was asked to draft a tentative programme of events for the forthcoming gathering, for submission to the next meeting of the executive The secretary was instructed to apply to the New Zealand Piping and Dancing Association for allocation of two championships for the 1Q37 gathering. Mr Brough reported that the Nelson Scottish Society had kindly offered to provide the concert programme for the society’s next Ingleside. It was decided that the offer be accepted and that the convener confer with the Chief of the Nelson Society as to a suitable date. The meeting agreed that an Ingleside be held each month commencing July. The Chief reported that nothing definite had come to hand in regard to the proposed federation of the Nelson, Marlborough and Motueka societies. On the motion of Messrs Milne and Brough it was decided that it be a recommendation to the Marlborough and Nelson societies that a meeting be held at Nelson to discuss the proposal l for the formation of a federation of Scottish and Caledonian societies and that Motueka be prepared to be represented at the conference by two members.
