OBITUARY

MR F. 11. J. McIIUGH, OF BLENHEIM The death occurred with painful suddenness on Monday evening of Mr Francis Hugh John McHugh, of Freswick street, Blenheim (reports “The Express”). The late Mr McHugh, who was aged 39 years, was a married .man with two children, and as the operator of a carrying business and a former Rugby football representative was particularly well-known throughout the district. He was an exceedingly popular man, and the deepest sympathy is being extended to the bereaved family. After his return from the war, during which he saw several years’ service in France, being wounded twice and badly gassed, Mr McHugh was on the railway staff as a bridge carpenter. He subsequently engaged in contract shearing and other work on stations before setting up in business as a carrier. He was an outstanding Rugby forward and played for both Opawa and Waitohi Clubs and was for several seasons a Marlborough representative. He played in the combined .Marlborough-Nelson-Motueka team against the Springboks at Nelson in 1921, and against New South Wales at Blenheim in 1922. He was a son of the late Mr John McHugh and Mrs D. E. McHugh and was born at Ashburton. Other members of the family are Messsr Thomas, Vincent. Leo, Lindo (all of Blenheim), and Charles (Murchison), Miss Dorothy McHugh (Blenheim), and Mesdames R. Mills (Havelock), and W. Markham (Wellington).
