SIGMUND FREUD
A MIGHTY PIONEER (By Air Mail—From Our Own Correspondent) LONDON, 14th May. Only somebody as obtuse as a Nordic Nazi would deny that Freudian ideas have coloured modern philosophy. But, amidst the 80th birthday celebrations of this famous Jewish doctor, it is well to remember that Freud himself would vehemently and indignantly repudiate more than half the theories grafted on to his philosophy by so-called psycho-analysts. Psychology is as old as its inventor, Aristotle, but psycho-analysis is of recent date and less respectable ancestry Much of the decadence which marks post-war society can be traced to muddle-headed notions which halfbaked Freudians have tried to sponsor on the matter. When Freud finds sex as the basis of most mental manifestations he used that word in a far wider sense than they understand in night clubs, and nothing could be more ridiculous than to make Freud’s theories about “repressions” an excuse for abolishing all social and nursery discipline. But Freud’s name will endure as that of a mighty pioneer into darkest sub-consciousness.
